Who AM I?

Leisure time poverty, the never-ending input and repetition of daily life, and the inconsistent burn out this causes are sources of inspiration for my practice. I draw from my own relationships and experiences and consider them in relation to the passage of time. Using humour and the written word, I explore the overwhelming constant input of the modern world, especially in a setting where ‘time is money’. This paradox of humour and sombreness mirrors the familiar tension we experience daily as we bounce back and forth between the formalities in life, and silly everyday-ness.

I create with the belief that duality is essential, and allowing ourselves to be consistently inconsistent, a contradiction, allows us to explore more of what it means to be human. I work with poetry, drawing, spoken word, music, and wearable sculpture. I aim to invite the work to steer me, rather than directing it. By recontextualizing common phrases, I aim to draw attention to the enormity of time anxiety. Evolving from this text and drawing, the work has developed to include moving image and performance to camera, combining analogue and digital media.

We are always in motion; this hesitation and oscillation is unstoppable and therefore things get left behind, I ask my audience how willing they are to leave or be left. The pigeon represents my awkward hesitance and being stuck in a time and place I should’ve progressed past. It is relatable, and common. The Ant represents a restless efficiency that burrows somewhere deeper under the surface. Both characters allow me to challenge my own self-portrait, and the way an audience perceives me. The world I am building allows me to exist in turmoil with the things I can’t quite keep up with and welcomes the audience to join me for the pity party.
